When Steroids Become Life Savers

Today, my eldest son’s school nurse called me up and informed me that I needed to bring him to the doctor since she can hear a lot of wheezing from his chest, and he was coughing unstoppably. Upon hearing these,  I had to inform my workmates that I needed to take a few hours off from work to bring Lean Raphael to a pulmonologist ASAP.  He has been coughing for days now and only had carbocisteine and cough expectorant to relieve him plus the eucalyptus oil massage that we apply on his chest and back. Today, it developed into a bad asthma attack.

Ughh. It must be the dust and smoke that got the best of him and his tired lungs, even if he nebulized himself this morning.

Ok, so, what struck me most during our consultation with the accommodating lady doctor, was when she mentioned that my son needed to take some steroids (Prednisone, specifically) for five days to help clear his lungs’ airway inflammation. She patiently explained that nebulization alone is not enough to relieve him of asthma.

Suddenly, Lean said out of nowhere,  ” Doc, aren’t steroids bad for us??”

Prednisone: A “helpful” steriod for the asthmatics

The pulmonologist smiled and explained that the bad effects of steroids can only be felt if taken for a long period of time (6 months or longer). My son must have read stuff about athletes getting caught and being disqualified from sports competition due to steroids abuse. The doctor reassured him that the benefits of steroids intake for five days outweigh my son’s ‘so-called fears’, and that the restful sleep it will give him, minus the coughs, wheezing and chest tightness is more valuable.

I can no longer hear him coughing right now, thank God. Thanks for the wonders of medical science.

Blog Weekend Bootcamp: A Homecoming of Sorts

The participants and organizers

In the past months, I have always seen Davao Bloggers’ activities in my FB newsfeed and there is this constant wish of mine to be part of the group. However, I noticed most of the bloggers I see in the event photos are younger than me, and geez, I might feel way out of their league so I just kept on lurking. Good thing, one of the officers/organizers, Karla, informed me about the Blogger Weekend Bootcamp (held on Sept 21-23, 2012) and reassured me that there are also mommies like me who actively blog and are frequent attendees in local blogger events.

See, I started writing since highschool and that’s like ages ago. And for the past few years, my job online has been focused on editing articles, SEO (search engine optimization) building, customer support, and the like. Although I have a personal blog here and I had another one in Friendster ( which died) years ago, I never really wrote regularly due to the heavy schedule I have at work ( gah, excuses, excuses). And this to me, is a chance to revive my penchant for writing again.

Bootcamp gear.

So there I was preparing for the bootcamp, (hmmm, the word bootcamp sounds so Barbie-doll~ish, but I was actually excited!) and was looking forward for the mini-vacation cum seminar amidst the relaxing ambiance of Malagos Garden Resort.

My pass!!!

And what made it even more exciting was the roster of speakers who were experts in their own rights. Janette Toral, Aileen Apolo, Rene Lizada, Jojie Alcantara, Jay Frank de Jesus and more!

Apart from the exciting line-up of activities, the registration fee of Php 1500 ( Php1300 for the early registrants) was a major come-on. It was definitely  a steal, as it already included bootcamp materials, full meals & snacks, and accommodations for 3 days and 2 nights. ‘San ka pa?

The tools.

In a nutshell, I’m glad I came and joined the rest of the Davao bloggers. I made new good friends and renewed my flair for sharing my random thoughts and what-nots in an online platform.  I am now a certified blogger, again!

(“Blog Weekend Bootcamp is a 3-day live-in conference with intensive hands-on workshop (Blogathon) that delves into the facets of blogging, creative writing, video blogging, photo blogging and Social Media. It is an excellent opportunity for bloggers of all skill levels to learn the best blogging and Social Media practices while utilizing the available tools for creating an effective online presence.”)

The event was made possible by the generous people of : Davao Bloggers, US Embassy of Manila, Smart, Sulit.com.ph, Malagos Garden Resort, Cre8tech, Abreeza Ayala Malls, San Miguel Brewery, KaiserWebSolutions and RAFI.

Got the balls coming, yeah!

Yay! Got my 2 magic 8 ball couple of months ago, thanks to my ever supportive clients. And ofcourse to Amazon for being there with just a click of a few buttons. Now, am thinking what toy or gadget to wish for that’s not available here in my country.

Honestly, it’s the wishing and waiting that’s more exciting.  Getting it makes it more like the icing on the cake or cherry on top of the icecream, or the peanut butter and jelly on my pandesal.

Ok, am shy to say this, i’m vain but..  i’m wondering how does facebook-ing feels with an Ipad. hehehe. ***wink***…

On the second thought maybe Amazon just amazes me ‘coz of the awesome stuff  being sold there, and i know Ipad has been here in Ph since  middle of last year. I am just a great fan of  random things we often don’t see in the malls. And if they’re just affordable, i’d try to own them before they hit the stores in Chinatown, and then I’d be prepared for the reality that they’re gonna  lose their so-called uniqueness and value, sigh, thanks to uber mass production.

Anyways, since i kinda hate iron stands coz the take up so much space when i’m ironing clothes ( yes, i do that, I’m a mother of  3 children who wear uniforms every single weekday.), but i still use them anyways, I wish there’s an iron board that i can just pull out from my closet  or wall. That way, i can freely push it back after pressing clothes, minus the hassle of  carrying the whole of an iron stand to and fro the laundry area.

Hmmm, shall I get? My Magic ball 8 says., “Outlook looks good!”

Lol, what a pressure.

My Hodgy Podgy Self – Second Serving

I find it a bit self-serving writing about myself, which explains the reason why it took me awhile to write a follow up article..( Sheesh, good excuse eh)

Anyways, I just had a busy week and am glad Christmas is almost here. ( wow, see i wrote this in draft coz its almost March now, lol!)

I had a mini reunion with family and relatives during my sister’s wedding last weekend. The thought poked me to write about the pieces about me again:

4. the Daughter – i tend to be stubborn, do things on my own but end up being the good girl at day’s end and follow parent’s orders. Till now that Mom’s a widow and sick and almost at her bed all the time, I still have that kind of fear in me to disappoint her and not hurt her very sensitive feelings especially now.

~~~guess am not in the mood to be in a hodgy podgy mode now, so, so long for the next servings , whenever that maybe 😉
